This year in which Aveiro is the Portuguese Capital of Culture, we opened the third quarter program, dedicated to Sustainability, with the Exhibition “A Sulcar a Ria: Embarcações da Ria de Aveiro”, conceived in close coordination with the Municipalities of Águeda, Albergaria- a-Velha, Estarreja, Ílhavo, Murtosa, Ovar, Sever do Vouga and Vagos that compose our Intermunicipal Community of the Aveiro Region, an exhibition that is a tribute to the genius, creation and work of so many people that chose this territory with all its uniqueness as a place to live, putting necessity at the service of innovation, creating new ways of integrating the Ria in their lifes and their lifes in the Ria.
A humid area, defined by the fresh waters of Baixo Vouga and the salty waters of the Ria, kissed by the Atlantic in a fraternal embrace, Aveiro is a region with a unique landscape, fertile and full of resources, agricultural and labor, maritime, lagoon and river, with a richness that dictates a persistent and resilient human presence and defines an identity, a way of being that refers to these many lines of water that run through the territory, creating and opening routes of commerce and discovery, unifying Man and his environment.
Curated by the Ílhavo Maritime Museum and the Monte Branco Shipyard-Museum (Murtosa), this exhibition portrays life on the water, for food, travel and trade, and the vessels that have always populated and illustrated the landscape , and stand out in the lines that umbilically define them, whether they are the Chata or Patacha or Rasca, the Mercantel or Barco Saleiro, the Bateira Ervideira de Canelas and Caçadeira, the Chinchorra or Chinchorro, the Labrega or Moliceira, the "Vouga", the Moliceiro or Andorinhas, and the Barco de Mar / Xávega.
Welcome to Aveiro, City, Municipality and Region, Portuguese Capital of Culture 2024. Enjoy this Exhibition and the many landscapes of the Ria, which is furrowed, in a metaphor that takes us to the furrows that the plow makes in the land, but also to the vessels that, tearing through the waters, open paths wherever they pass and add an exceptional territory: the Region of Aveiro.
